To me, this first clip is the most instructive clip of the movie. They are trying to decide whether or not to support independence. In that clip, Mel Gibson actually argues against independence. It is a great example of the risks and consequences of war that many of the undecided Americans were worried about. One-third of the colonists were undecided during the war, 1/3 were Patriots, and 1/3 were Loyalists.
